چکیده

In this paper, we consider the use of an application-layer performance measure — the utility — in the context of bandwidth allocation for an available bit rate service. Our bandwidth allocation scheme can be viewed as a generalization of traditional available bit rate service; our scheme is equivalent to bandwidth max-min allocation when the utility of all applications are equal. The goal of our allocation scheme is to provide good application-layer service to a wide diversity of applications sharing available bandwidth. We achieve this goal while also supporting changes in utility over time, tolerating some inaccuracy in utility function specification, and addressing the issue of circumvention through pricing. Keywords—Utility functions, available bit rate.

Utility Max-Min Fair Resource Allocation for Diversified Applications in EPON

In EPONs, differentiated services enable higher quality of service (QoS) for some queues over others. However, owing to the coarse granularity of DiffServ, DiffServ in EPONs can hardly facilitate any particular QoS profile. This paper investigates an application-oriented bandwidth allocation scheme to ensure fairness among queues with diversified QoS requirements. We first define application ut...

Utility Proportional Fair Bandwidth Allocation: An Optimization Oriented Approach

In this paper, we present a novel approach to the congestion control and resource allocation problem of elastic and real-time traffic in telecommunication networks. With the concept of utility functions, where each source uses a utility function to evaluate the benefit from achieving a transmission rate, we interpret the resource allocation problem as a global optimization problem. The solution...

ABR service for applications with non-linear bandwidth utility functions

An available bit rate (ABR) service allows applications to access a time-varying network capacity. In a basic ABR service, the available network capacity is divided \fairly" amongst active connections, without regard to the utility that each application derives from the bandwidth allocation. The goal of this paper is to improve both the global and individual utility obtained by applications usi...

WiMAX DBA Algorithm Prioritizes Bandwidth Provision by Using a Reserved 2-Tier Max-Min Fair Sharing Policy

IEEE 802.16 leaves important issues like uplink bandwidth allocation to vendors. This paper proposes an enhanced WiMAX DBA (Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation) algorithm using a reserved 2-tier Max-Min Fair Sharing Policy (2tMMFS_reserved-DBA) to improve the system performance than our previous 2tMMFS-DBA one. First, the algorithm reserves 10% of the total bandwidth for rtPS application before bandwi...

On Utility-Fair Adaptive Services in Wireless Networks

Adaptive quality of service techniques can e ectively respond to time-varying channel conditions found in wireless networks. In this paper we assess the state-of-the-art in quality of service adaptive wireless systems and argue for new adaptation techniques that are better suited to respond to application speci c adaptation needs. A quality of service adaptive data link control model is present...
